OverviewFrustrated with the limited choices provided by mainstream laptop computer suppliers? Do you need a machine customized for your purposes, but don’t have space for a room consuming tower? Like desktop computers, you can now build your own laptop computer with relative ease. With the internet selling hundreds of barebone laptops, it is easier than ever to build a laptop to your purposes. Whether you are a gamer, an architect or a musician with very special computing needs, building your own laptop can give you the hardware you need, at a price you can afford.Step 1A barebones laptop is a computer shell which you add hardware to. There are several manufacturers selling barebones laptop kits, the most popular being Asus. Choose your barebones laptop according to your computing needs.Step 2Finding parts is the next step. Most barebones come with at least a few parts, including the motherboard and the optical drive. It is up to you whether the parts included meet your standard. You will then need to collect the other parts necessary to finish your computer. Usually this means a processor, graphics and/or video card, Wi-Fi card, memory (RAM) and hard drive. Most of these can be purchased online.Step 3Collect all of your tools. For most laptops you will need a Philips-head screwdriver, needle nose pliers and Torx screwdrivers.Step 4Break out the instruction manual. Many barebones models include instructions on how to install the individual components. If yours does not, have a look online for similar projects. If you can’t find detailed instructions, the first step is to open the laptop case. Make sure, before working on the inside of the computer, that you connect your Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) wrist strap to the ESD mat you purchased, making sure the mat is grounded to an outlet. This prevents you from damaging any of the components with the natural build up of static electricity on your body. Once open, you can see the different slots which need to be filled by your various components.Step 5Install your processor, Wi-Fi card, video card, hard drive and memory according to the slots inside your barebones laptop. Once everything is installed, close the laptop and make sure it powers on properly. The software has not been installed, so you will not see a proper boot, but you will see that the computer is powering on.Step 6Choose the best software to load onto your computer.
