Installing Insulation in Basement

By Jon Olson

OverviewThe purpose of insulation is to keep your home cooler during the summer months and warmer during the winter months. One of the first steps in finishing a basement is the installation of insulation. It is only necessary to insulate the exterior walls since this is where the hot/cold air transfer occurs. You can use either fiberglass or Styrofoam insulation, depending on your needs.Installing Fiberglass Insulation Between StudsStep 1Seal all basement exterior walls with concrete sealant. This will prevent moisture from reaching the insulation and causing mold to grow.Step 2Measure the distance between wall studs. Typical widths are 16-inches and 24-inches. Purchase insulation of the same width. The most common insulation is R-13 fiberglass insulation. The R-value refers to the quality of insulation; a higher R-value will insulate better than a lower one.Step 3Measure the height of your wall. Use a utility knife to cut a length of insulation to the height measurement.Step 4Gently press the insulation into the cavity of the wall between two studs. Be careful not to crush the insulation.Step 5Fold out the paper tabs and adhere them to the studs with a tack hammer and one-fourth inch staples.Installing Styrofoam InsulationStep 1Purchase sheets of four-foot-by-eight-foot Styrofoam insulation, two inches thick.Step 2Measure the height of the basement wall. Use a utility knife to cut the insulation sheets to the height measurement.Step 3Spread construction adhesive onto the Styrofoam insulation. This will bond the Styrofoam to your wall.Step 4Position the Styrofoam insulation on the wall and firmly hold it in place for five minutes until the adhesive has begun to set.skill2ingredientConcrete sealant
