OverviewTraining an aggressive dog is all about behavior modification. This includes positive and negative reinforcement, such as a treat for good behavior and taking something away in response to bad behavior. Such training requires patience and time, but anyone can do it.Step 1Ignore the dog if it barks when visitors come to the door. Walk calmly to the door, open it and greet the visitor. If the dog doesn’t cease barking, ask the visitor to repeat the action, and continue to ignore the dog. Don’t look at the dog. Don’t allow the visitor to come in until the dog has stopped barking.Step 2Use a restraining lead or a chain collar. A restraining lead has a harness-style collar that goes over the dog’s head. It makes it difficult to pull, because it applies pressure. If the dog pulls away with a chain collar, its neck will be pinched.Step 3Stop immediately if the dog runs after or barks at something during a walk. Issue a stern “heel” command and turn around, walking back. When the dog behaves again, turn back around and continue on your way. Repeat as necessary.Step 4Be fearless and calm if your dog latches on to you or someone else. Ignore it and turn away. Practice with a friend or family member you know the dog doesn’t like. When the the dog calms down, reward it with treats. Repeat this to teach the aggressive dog what is acceptable behavior.Step 5Make the person who is having the most difficulty with the dog be the main caregiver. He should train, feed, reward and play with it. This will teach the dog to see the person as a positive.Step 6Reward submissive behavior. This includes if the dog lays down, puts its ears back or avoids eye contact.Step 7Sign up for training with a professional, who is the most likely to have success training an aggressive dog.
