How to Purify Water When Hiking
Having clean drinking water when hiking is relatively simple when you have the right equipment. Boiling, filters, and tablets are all methods that make natural water sources safe for drinking.

OverviewYou can probably carry enough water for a one-day hike, but if you want to hike for a few days, you’ll need to know how to purify water you take from rivers and streams. Water found in nature may look clean and clear, but they are full of bacteria that can make you ill.Step 1Build a fire when you set up your tent for the night. Pour the water you will need for the next day in a pot and bring it to a boil. Continue to boil it for 20 minutes. Remove it from the heat and let it cool off. Repeat each night before you go to bed.Step 2Pack some purification tablets. These tablets are sold in bottles of 30 tablets and they purify about eight gallons of water. The tablets usually need to work in the water for 30 minutes before you can drink the water, but you should look at the instructions on the bottle because different brands may take different amounts of time. Remember how long it takes so you prepare water for drinking ahead of time.Step 3Buy a special bottle that contains a filter. It will look like a sports bottle, but the filter purifies the water as it goes through the straw and into your mouth. It works the same way as a filter you attach to your kitchen sink. Just fill the bottle with water. You can drink it immediately as long as you drink out of the straw.Step 4Water purifiers you put inside a container are more expensive than other water purification systems, but they last a long time so can purify a lot of water, and are small and easy to carry. You just fill the container with water and place the end of a water purifier inside. Stir the water and then press the button on the water purifier. It’s as simple as that.skill2ingredientPot
