How to Make Your Own Kitchen Cabinets

OverviewKitchens are said to be the most expensive room of the house. Kitchens are also said to get the most use. It is always good to have plenty of storage and work space in a kitchen. Whether you are remodeling or just wanting extra space, building your own cabinets can save you money.Building the CarcassStep 1Identify the height, width, and depth desired for your cabinet. Your finished product will fall within these measurements.Step 2Cut the sides. Take your height measurement and crosscut a sheet of 3/4″ x 4′ x 8′ hardwood plywood to this measurement. Subtract 3/4″ from your depth measurement and rip the plywood to this new measurement. The 3/4″ will later be added when the face frame is installed.Step 3Cut the top and bottom. Use your depth measurement (minus 3/4″ for the face frame) and rip the plywood to this size. Take the overall width measurement and subtract 1 1/2″ (the thickness of both sides). Crosscut your plywood to this new measurement for the width.Step 4Dry-fit the sides, top, and bottom together. The height and width measurement of the dry-fitted carcass should equal the exact size of your original measurements from step 1. Add 3/4″ (for the face frame) to the depth and it should also match the original measurement.Step 5Position the top piece, flush with the top of the side pieces and position the bottom piece 2″ up from the bottom of the side pieces. Fasten the carcass together using wood glue and 1 1/4″ staples.Adding the Face FrameStep 1Rip a 3/4″ hardwood board into strips 2″ wide.Step 2Crosscut two pieces to the overall height of your cabinet. Install these on the left and right face of your cabinet. Use wood glue and 1 1/4″ Pin Nails.Step 3Measure the distance between the left and right face frame pieces. Crosscut two more face frame pieces to this measurement. Install these on the top and bottom of the face of your cabinet. Use wood glue and 1 1/4″ pin nails.Step 4Wait until the glue has dried. Sand the face frame so that all joints are smooth.Creating the DoorsStep 1Measure the height and width of your cabinet opening between face face frame pieces.Step 2Calculate the width measurement for each door. Divide the overall width measurement of the opening by 2 and add 1/2″. This is the width of each door. For example: If the width opening is 20″, dividing by 2 equals 10″, then add 1/2″. The size of each door is 10 1/2″Step 3Calculate the height measurement. Using the overall height measurement of your opening, add 1 1/4″ (5/8″ for the top and bottom).Step 4Cut a sheet of MDF core 3/4″ hardwood plywood to the dimensions calculated for your door.Step 5Install 35mm 5/8″ Overlay Euro Hinges on the cabinet door. Attach the doors to the cabinet.Completing the ProjectStep 1Measure the inside dimensions of your cabinet. Record the depth and width measurements. Cut a piece of plywood to the recorded measurements. This will serve as your shelf.Step 2Drill a series of 1/4″ holes vertically up the inside of your cabinet. Locate the holes 1 1/2″ away from the face frame and back of your cabinet. Install 1/4″ shelf pins to hold up your shelf.Step 3Use a router with a rabbiting bit to rabbit the back of the cabinet. Cut a sheet of 1/4″ plywood to these dimensions and install using wood glue and 3/4″ Pin Nails.Step 4Apply stain and finish to your project allowing plenty of dry time between coats.Step 5Install the cabinet in your kitchen.skill4ingredientTape Measure
