OverviewBasement windows are essential in providing light to a dark, isolated area. Often, however, they’re neglected and old and need replacing. Window kits are available to purchase which include an assembled frame and window, as well as the mounting hardware. Follow these tips to learn how to install basement windows.Step 1Measure the height and width of the basement window opening with a tape measure. Record the exact dimensions so you know what size kit to purchase. It’s a good idea to measure each one, if you are replacing more than one, in case the dimensions are slightly different from one to another.Step 2Buy a window kit from a hardware or glass retailer.Step 3Remove the sash and frame of the old window. Clean the opening to ensure a perfect fit for the new window. Use a drill to install a piece of metal or wood molding on the inside of the frame to ensure a tight fit. The molding may be included in the kit or you may need to purchase it.Step 4Fit the window frame into the opening from the outside of the house. Make sure it sits securely in place. If not, add shims to center it.Step 5Screw through the window frame and into the mudsill.Step 6Follow the directions and mix the mortar that came in the kit. Trowel it onto the sides and bottom of the window opening. Make sure it is thick and not runny.Step 7Apply material along the top of the window to allow for expansion and contraction. Caulk along the top of the window.Step 8Allow the mortar to harden. Fit a piece of molding to the outside of the window to ensure a tight fit and no leaks.
