OverviewGetting your hair colored by a pro can be uncomfortable, time-consuming and expensive. If you would rather color your own hair at home, it isn’t that difficult if you know how to do it. Whether you’d like to go darker, lighter or match your natural hair color, you can save your money and do your hair at home. Full-processes, where the entire head is colored, are recommended to do at home, while more difficult techniques like highlights and full foils are better left to the professionals.Step 1Comb dry, unwashed hair with a wide-toothed comb to get rid of tangles.Step 2Wrap an old towel around your shoulders. Most likely, you will get hair color on the towel, and it will stain.Step 3Put on rubber gloves and squeeze your hair color into a plastic container. You can buy hair color at a drugstore or beauty supply store. Most hair color comes with color and developer. Sometimes beauty supply stores sell color and developer separately, so ask a store employee if you aren’t sure what to get. Most boxed hair color contains both a developer and a color that you must mix together at home. Using the dye brush, mix the color and the developer together for about 30 seconds.Step 4Using hair clips, section your hair into four parts and clip up carefully. You can buy these hair clips at a beauty supply store or drugstore.Step 5Apply the hair color mixture carefully to your roots using the dye brush. Paint the color on slowly and carefully to thoroughly saturate it. Avoid getting the hair color on your skin, eyebrows or ears, but try to saturate every strand of hair.Step 6Unclip one section of the hair once the roots have been saturated. Use your gloved hands and the dye brush to fully saturate that section in color. When the section has been fully saturated, place the hair back into the clip. Continue with each section of hair.Step 7Leave the hair color in according to the directions, or when your hair reaches your desired color. You can tell what color it has reached by wiping a small portion off of your hair with your gloved fingers. When you have reached your desired color, rinse thoroughly in the shower with warm water.skill3ingredientWide-toothed comb
