Use these creative molds and easy techniques to sculpt a sand castle masterpiece.

A day at the beach isn’t complete without building a sand castle. Basic castles are easy to make without specialized equipment, but using molds guarantees solid, consistent shapes for both basic construction and elaborate details. Depending on the molds’ size and shape, intricate castles and sturdy fortifications can be sculpted to withstand an army of seagulls, invading crabs, or even a seaweed siege.
Types of Molds
Large, basic molds are best for castle foundations. Trash cans, buckets, bowls, and old plastic containers create round bases, while bread pans, cake pans, and sturdy boxes are perfect for building preliminary bricks. These molds are best for young or inexperienced sand architects, since larger shapes are easier to manipulate without destroying delicate details.
Small castles require smaller basic molds. Cups, mugs, plastic eggs, and pie tins provide round shapes, and ice cube trays easily form small square bricks. These smaller molds are also useful to vary brick size in larger castles, or smaller bricks can be incorporated into upper stories of large structures for greater stability. Using Molds
Large, basic molds are easy to use and require very little special care.
