Packing for college is an exciting and stressful experience. You do not want to forget any essential items, especially ones that cannot be purchased once you get to school. You may want to take everything at once, or only take items that are appropriate for the current season. You can base this decision on how often you return home and when you will have a chance to bring more things to your dorm. It is also a good idea to check with your future roommate to avoid duplicate items.Personal ItemsYou will need to take any personal items that you use regularly and even items that you need just on occasion. Toiletries such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste and a toothbrush are musts. You will also need to take different kinds of clothing. Take casual items for class and items that you can go out in. Don’t forget pajamas and different kinds of shoes. Take any medications that you need as well as some basic first aid items.LinensMost colleges provide beds, but you will need to bring your own sheets. Bring a few sets of sheets and pillowcases that will get you by until you can do laundry. Bring blankets or comforters of different thicknesses. You will also need to provide your own towels and washcloths.Housekeeping ItemsYou have to keep your room clean. There is no housekeeping staff that will pick up after you. Bring the appropriate cleaning supplies to keep your room clean and comfortable. Bring a broom and vacuum cleaner if you have a carpet. You may also want a small mop if you have a tile floor. You will also need to wash your own dishes and clothes. Bring laundry detergent and dish soap as well as paper towels.Food Items and SuppliesMost of your meals will be eaten in the dorm cafeteria, but you will need to have some of your own food in your room. Bring snack foods for late-night studying. There will also be days when you do not feel like going to the cafeteria. Bring non-perishable food that you can store in your room. Items like canned soup and cereal will keep well. Bring a small refrigerator and microwave to keep in your room. You will also need some pots and pans as well as dishes and silverware.Entertainment ItemsCollege life is not all about going to class and studying. You will want to bring items for entertainment and recreation. Small appliances such as a television, DVD player and radio are a necessity. Bring movies with you or get a membership to a video store or club. You may also want to bring a game console. Novels are a quiet form of entertainment that you can use while your roommate is sleeping.School ItemsDon’t forget to bring items that will help you succeed in your studies. Notebooks, pens, pencils, and markers are basics and you should have a variety of them. You should also invest in a good calculator for any math or science classes. Most colleges have 24-hour computer labs available, but you may want to bring your own laptop or desktop computer so you can work in your room.ResourcesreferenceCollege Dorm Room Checklist
